About ICE

The International Conference on Events (ICE) is a series of conferences organised by a team of international academics in festivals and events research. It started way back in 2013, which was first hosted by Bournemouth University in the UK. The following year was a smaller conference in Sheffield, UK. ICE truly became international when the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies in Macao, China, hosted ICE2015. Two years later, ICE travelled further an reached Orlando, Florida, in the United States, which the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida hosted ICE2017. After much planning, the ICE Organising Committee is proud to work with the local host of ICE2020, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa, to be held 17-21 April 2020.

Why 'Making Waves'?

It all began on a train journey... four female academics from Bournemouth University entertained a carriage on how we should bid to organise the post-Olympic & Paralympic Forum down by the sea. We therefore had some fun scoping out the conference and coming up with themes related to the place and so waves were created.

Previous ICE events

The ICE conference is dedicated to all researchers who tirelessly work to advance our knowledge; and to practitioners in festivals and events who put together great shows for our enjoyment and needs.

We count on you to create this together.

Interested to host the next ICE?

The spirit of ICE is to encourage institutions to host the biannual conference and the general expectation is that the host must have a department and/or programme in event management, cultural events, business events or related subjects, preferably be at least a Bachelor degree level. Many institutions find this an invaluable opportunity to market their own programmes to a wider academic community and generate marketing interests locally, regionally and internationally.

For this reason, ICE operates on a non-profit basis and receives no commission. The local host is expected to shoulder all necessary costs involved in hosting the conference, while keeping the registration cost to the minimum (we strongly advise the local host to aim for a break-even and not to make a profit from hosting ICE events). In return, the host institution is granted the rights to use the ICE brand, its associated images and slogans and support from the ICE committee members. Host institutions are typically invited to join the organising committee of the next conference to share their own expertise and to build up a strong and supportive network of academics.
